One day at Canyonlands National Park (Island in the Sky) | Grand Viewpoint, Green River & Mesa Arch!

For our first National Park visit in Moab this summer, we visited the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park! We only stayed for half of the day because of the heat but this worked out well because this area of Canyonlands is full of shorter hikes and overlooks, perfect for visiting with kids. We opted to do only 3 because we were here in July and it was HOT! We started at the farthest point in the Island of the Sky District, the Grand Viewpoint. Next we headed to Green River Overlook and finished the day at Mesa Arch. It was really cool to see this during the day nut I would definitely recommend sunrise if you can manage it!

Canyonlands National Park is split into 3 sections by two rivers, the Colorado and the Green River. The Needles District is to the South of Moab, Island of the Sky to the North West and the Maze further West.

Our first stop was Grand View Point. This overlook lies at the southernmost end of the Island in the Sky scenic drive. From here, you can see the across miles of canyons, the White Rim four-wheel-drive road, and even parts of The Maze and The Needles districts.

A short, paved sidewalk leads to a spectacular viewpoint. Perfect for strollers and wheelchairs. On the day we went, a Rangers was presenting a geology talk which they typically do spring through fall.

From there you can head to the right and hike an additional mile to a second viewpoint.  The hike is a beautiful out and back trail with stunning views as you spend a good portion of it walking along the canyon edge. This trail can be rough, uneven, and requires walking up and down a rocky hill and stone steps.

Green River has the best views of one of Canyonlands’ two mighty rivers: the Green River can be seen 1,300 feet (396 m) below this viewpoint. Visitors can also see features of The Maze district and the White Rim Road. This is also one of the best places in the Park to watch the sunset.

Our last stop was at Mesa Arch, arguably the most famous spot in the park! And for good reason, even after 6 years since our first visit, this is still one of the best sunrises I have ever seen. It was gorgeous during the day to but beware that there is no shade!

On our way out of the park we made sure to stop at the visitor center to drop off Sophie’s Junior Ranger booklet. We take advantage of this free activity at every National Park.
