Ouray Via Ferrata: Know Before You Go

The Ouray Via Ferrata has become a HUGE attraction for adventure seekers visiting Ouray and for good reason, it’s incredible!  But if I am being honest, I think I did get in over my head just a little. It was one of the hardest things, physically, that I have ever done. I want to share my experience and have together with my friends at Visit Ouray, put together a list of 9 things you need to know.

“The climb is better when you know the ropes, so Know Before You Go and Do Ouray Right.”

  1. Physical Fitness and Experience: While you don’t need prior climbing experience, a basic level of fitness and a head for heights are important.
  1. Safety Equipment: Via Ferrata routes require the use of safety equipment, including a helmet, harness, and via ferrata lanyard. These are typically provided by the tour operator or available for rental. I got my equipment from @sanjuanmountainguides. Make sure to use the equipment properly and follow the guide’s instructions.
  2. Guided Tours: It’s highly recommended to go on a guided tour for your first Via Ferrata experience. Trained guides will provide instruction on how to use the equipment, offer safety briefings, and ensure your overall well-being throughout the activity.
  3. Weather Conditions: Weather can greatly affect your Via Ferrata experience. Before heading out, check the weather forecast and be aware of any potential storms or adverse conditions. In inclement weather, tours may be canceled or rescheduled for safety reasons.
  1. Clothing and Gear: Wear comfortable and weather-appropriate clothing, including sturdy shoes with good traction. Dress in layers to accommodate changing temperatures and bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for sun protection.  Include closed-toed shoes and gloves
  2. Water and Snacks: Bring an adequate supply of water to stay hydrated during the activity. You may also want to bring some snacks or energy bars. We recommend 1 Liter of water per person.
  1. Age and Weight Restrictions: Climbers weighing less than 90 lbs or more than 265 lbs must utilize a supplemental belay system on sections with significant vertical climbing. They are REQUIRED to go with a guide in these cases.
  2. Mental Preparedness: Via Ferrata involves exposure to heights and can be mentally challenging.
  3. Respect the Environment: Follow all instructions regarding the protection of the environment and be sure to Do Ouray Right by if you Pack It In, Pack It Out.
